Coffee table size and distance from the sofa
Three numbers decide whether a coffee table works: its distance from the seat, its length and its height. Here they are, with examples for real sofas.

The short answer
The ideal coffee table distance from the sofa is 40 to 50 cm, measured from the front edge of the seat to the edge of the table: close enough to reach a cup, far enough for your knees. A common rule is to choose a table about two thirds of the sofa's length, at seat height or up to 5 cm lower. For the Snoozo sofa bed, 190 cm wide with a 36 cm seat, that means a table about 125 cm long and 31 to 36 cm high.
| Distance from the seat | 40 to 50 cm |
|---|---|
| Length | About two thirds of the sofa |
| Height | Seat height, or up to 5 cm lower |
| Space to walk around it | At least 60 cm |
| Snoozo seat height | 36 cm |

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?
A common rule is 40 to 50 cm between the front of the seat and the edge of the table, and 45 cm is a good default. Closer than 40 cm, knees and feet start to bump; further than 50 cm, you have to lean forward every time you reach for a cup or a plate of dates.
Two situations call for a little more space:
- Deep, low lounging sofas. When you sit low and far back, your legs reach further forward. On a low seat, 50 cm usually feels better than 40.
- Serving at the table. If someone will step between the sofa and the table to pour coffee or tea for guests, open the gap to about 60 cm.
Measure from the seat edge, not from the arm or the back. On a deep sofa, the front of the seat is where knees are, and that is the line that counts.
How long should a coffee table be?
A common rule is that the coffee table should be about two thirds of the length of the sofa. It then looks in proportion, and everyone on the sofa can reach it. Stop the table short of the arms, so people can get in and out at each end without squeezing past.
| Sofa | Sofa width | Coffee table, about two thirds |
|---|---|---|
| Brioche 2-seater | 206 cm | 135 cm |
| Snoozo sofa bed | 190 cm | 125 cm |
| Nuage 3-seater | 230 cm | 155 cm |
Treat the figure as a guide, not a target. A table 20 cm shorter works perfectly well, and in a small room a shorter table that keeps a comfortable walkway is always the better choice. Avoid going much longer: a table that runs past the seats blocks the way in and out of the sofa.
What height should a coffee table be?
The easy rule: the table top sits level with the seat, or up to 5 cm lower. At that height you can put a cup down without bending far, and the table does not block the view across the room.
| Sofa | Seat height | Coffee table height |
|---|---|---|
| Nuage | 40 cm | 35 to 40 cm |
| Snoozo | 36 cm | 31 to 36 cm |
| Doudou | 45 cm | 40 to 45 cm |
| Brioche | 46 cm | 41 to 46 cm |
Low, lounge-like sofas look best with low tables, while upright sofas pair well with slightly taller ones. If your family often eats, plays cards or does homework at the coffee table, choose the top of the range. Our guide to seat depth and height explains how the seat height changes the way you sit.

Snoozo's low, relaxed 36 cm seat and compact 190 cm width pair easily with a low coffee table of 31 to 36 cm high.

- Rectangular or oval with a straight 2-seater or 3-seater: the shape follows the sofa and everyone can reach it.
- Round in small rooms, on busy walkways and in homes with young children: smooth, curved edges and an easy shape to walk around. For a 2-seater or 3-seater, about 80 to 100 cm across suits most rooms.
- Square or round with a corner sofa: placed in the crook of the L, it serves the main seat and the chaise equally. About 90 to 120 cm across, depending on the sofa.
- Long and narrow, or several small tables, between two sofas facing each other or in a majlis, so that every guest can reach a surface.
Whatever the shape, think about the edges. In a home with toddlers, rounded corners feel friendly; in a busy majlis, a table with a small raised rim keeps cups and dates where they belong.
The space around the coffee table
The table is only half the story: the space around it decides whether the room flows. Keep at least 60 cm between the table and the TV unit or any other furniture, and 75 to 90 cm if it lies on a main route through the room.
The depth of the table, front to back, usually falls between 50 and 70 cm for a straight sofa. If your room is short on depth, a narrower table is the simplest fix. Add it all up: with the Snoozo, 90 cm deep, a 45 cm gap, a 60 cm table and a 60 cm walkway already take 255 cm before the TV unit. Our guide to six living room layouts shows how this plays out in different rooms.
Coffee tables with a corner sofa
A corner sofa changes the geometry. The chaise reaches further into the room than the main seat: on the Comfo with a chaise, the chaise is 229 cm deep against 114 cm for the rest of the sofa, so it stands 115 cm further forward. That leaves a natural pocket in front of the main seat, right beside the chaise.
Place the table in that pocket, 40 to 50 cm from the front of the main seat and from the side of the chaise. A square or round table works best here, because it is equally easy to reach from both. Whether your chaise is on the left or the right, always named as seen when you face the sofa, the same rule applies. Check too that the table and the end of the chaise leave a walkway of at least 60 cm in front.
Side tables: the surface people forget
Not every seat can reach the coffee table, especially on a corner sofa or a long sofa. Side tables fill the gap. A common rule is to choose one within about 5 cm of the height of the sofa arm, so your hand falls naturally onto it.
For a family home, one side table at each end of the sofa is a good minimum. When you host, a C-shaped table that slides under the sofa brings a surface to the middle seats, and small stools become extra tables wherever they are needed. The aim, especially for long evenings with guests: nobody should hold a cup for an hour because there is nowhere to put it down.

Questions, answered
Should a coffee table be higher or lower than the sofa seat?
Level with the seat or slightly lower, by up to about 5 cm. A table higher than the seat feels like a barrier and blocks the view across the room; one much lower makes you bend every time you reach for your cup.
What size coffee table suits a corner sofa?
A square or round table of about 90 to 120 cm across, placed in the crook of the L, 40 to 50 cm from both the main seat and the chaise. Check that you still keep at least 60 cm to walk in front of it.
Can a coffee table be longer than two thirds of the sofa?
A little, yes, as long as it stops short of the arms and leaves a walkway around it. In practice, a slightly shorter table almost always works better than a longer one, especially in apartments.
How much space should there be between the coffee table and the TV unit?
At least 60 cm if people walk there now and then, and 75 to 90 cm if it is a main route through the room. If that space runs short, choose a narrower table or mount the TV on the wall.
