Soft or firm sofa? Cocoon and Classic comfort explained
Sink in or sit on it? How seat comfort works, who each feel suits, and how to choose between our Cocoon and Classic comforts.

The short answer
Choosing a soft or firm sofa depends on how you use it. A soft seat you sink into is best for lounging, naps and film nights; a medium seat that holds you up is best for conversation, working on a laptop and anyone who wants to stand up easily. At Pufflo every sofa comes in both, at the same price: Cocoon, very soft, and Classic, the medium feel most sofas have.
| Cocoon | Very soft, you sink in |
|---|---|
| Classic | Medium, you sit on it and get up easily |
| Price difference | None, same price |
| Start in Cocoon | Comfo, Nuage |
| Start in Classic | Brioche, Snoozo, Doudou |

What makes a sofa feel soft or firm?
Seat comfort comes from layers working together. Springs in the frame carry your weight. A block of foam on top gives the seat its support. Softer layers around that foam, and the fabric itself, decide how the first few centimetres feel when you sit down.
Two words help. Softness is how far you sink. Support is how well the seat holds you once you have sunk. A good soft sofa still supports you; it simply lets you sink further before it does. A poor soft sofa keeps giving until you feel the frame.
Foam density is a separate question. Density measures how much material is in the foam, which mostly affects how long it keeps its shape, not how soft it feels. Our sofa foam guide explains the difference.
Cocoon or Classic: how our two comforts compare
| Cocoon | Classic | |
|---|---|---|
| First feel | Very soft, you sink in | Medium, you sit on it |
| Posture | Relaxed, leaning back into the cushions | Upright and supported |
| Getting up | Takes a little more effort | Easy |
| Best for | Lounging, naps, film nights | Conversation, guests, working, older relatives |
| Price | Same price | Same price |
You choose the comfort on every sofa page. Comfo and Nuage start in Cocoon, because they are lounging sofas by design; Brioche, Snoozo and Doudou start in Classic. You can choose the other comfort on any of them at no extra cost.
Who should choose a soft sofa?
Choose a soft seat if the sofa is where you unwind: long evenings, films, a nap on a Friday afternoon. Soft seats suit deep lounging sofas especially well, because you sink in and lean back into the cushions instead of perching on the edge.
- You usually sit with your legs up, curled or crossed.
- The sofa is mostly for one or two people rather than for receiving guests.
- You have a separate, more formal seating area for guests, such as a majlis.
- You love the feeling of being held by the sofa more than sitting on it.
Keep in mind that a soft seat shows where people sit most. Plumping the back cushions and sitting in different places keeps the seat looking even.

Nuage is our softest sofa: a low 40 cm seat, plump back cushions and cloud-soft bouclé, and it starts in Cocoon.
From AED 3,990 · delivered and installedWho should choose a firmer sofa?
Choose a medium feel if the sofa is mostly used for sitting upright: chatting with guests, eating in front of the TV, reading or working. It is also the kinder choice for anyone who finds getting up from a low, soft seat an effort, such as grandparents who come for long evenings during Ramadan or at Eid.
- You receive guests often and want everyone to sit comfortably upright.
- Older relatives or tall people use the sofa every day.
- You like a crisp, tailored look: firmer seats hold their shape and their lines.
Medium does not mean hard. Classic is the feel most sofas have: you sit on it rather than in it, and it still feels comfortable after an hour.
How seat depth and height change the feel
Comfort is never only the foam. The same softness feels very different on a low, deep seat than on a higher, shallower one.
| Sofa | Seat height | Seat depth | Starts in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nuage | 40 cm | 58 cm | Cocoon |
| Comfo | 48 cm | 74 cm | Cocoon |
| Snoozo | 36 cm | 65 cm | Classic |
| Doudou | 45 cm | 65 cm | Classic |
| Brioche | 46 cm | 64 cm | Classic |
A low seat in Cocoon, like Nuage, is the most relaxed combination in the collection. A higher seat in Classic, like Brioche, is the easiest to get up from. If you are torn, a medium seat is the safer bet: you can always add soft cushions to make a seat feel cosier, but you cannot make a soft seat firmer. More on the numbers in sofa seat depth and height.
What if your household disagrees on comfort?
It happens in most homes: one person wants to sink in, the other wants to sit up. Start by asking who uses the sofa most, and when. The comfort should suit the person who spends the most evenings on it, then be adapted for everyone else.
- Classic plus soft extras: a medium seat with a plump back cushion, a throw and a couple of feather-filled scatter cushions feels cosy for the lounger and still lets the others sit upright.
- Cocoon plus a firm chair: if the main sofa is for lounging, add an armchair or a firmer seat nearby for older relatives and guests.
- Two seats, two comforts: in a larger room, two sofas facing each other can be ordered in different comforts, one for lounging and one for conversation.
Body weight plays a part too. The heavier the person, the further they sink into a soft seat, so a comfort that feels gently soft to one person can feel very soft to another.
Will a new sofa get softer over time?
A little, yes. Most new sofas feel slightly firmer for the first few weeks, while the foam, the wrapping around it and the fabric settle into the shape of the seat. After that, a seat made with high-resilience foam of 35 kg/m³ or more should keep its feel for years.
What you should not see is cushions that flatten within weeks or lose height where you sit. That usually points to low-density foam, whatever the comfort. To help any sofa age evenly, sit in different places rather than always in the same corner, and plump back cushions regularly. Our sofa care routine lists the simple habits that help.
How to choose a comfort when you order online
Ordering online means trusting numbers and descriptions, so use them well:
- Start from a sofa you know. Is the one you have now too soft, too firm or just right? Note whether you sink in or sit on it.
- Read the How it feels guide on each sofa page. It describes the seat when you sit and the fabric when you touch it.
- Match comfort to use. Lounging most evenings: Cocoon. Upright conversation and guests: Classic.
- Ask us on WhatsApp if you are still unsure. Tell us your height, how you like to sit and what you think of your current sofa, and we will tell you which comfort we would choose in your place.
Each sofa is handmade when you order, so the comfort you pick is the one built into your sofa.
Questions, answered
Is a soft sofa less durable than a firm one?
Not necessarily. Durability depends mostly on foam density and quality, not on how soft the seat feels. A soft seat built on dense high-resilience foam can outlast a firm seat made with low-density foam.
When do I choose between Cocoon and Classic?
When you order, on the sofa page, and the price stays the same either way. Each sofa is handmade after you order, so the comfort you choose is built into your sofa. If you are unsure, ask us on WhatsApp before you confirm.
Is Cocoon too soft for everyday use?
Not if you mostly lounge: it is made for sinking in and relaxing every evening, and it is made with the same care as Classic. If you often sit upright to eat, work or talk with guests, Classic will feel better day to day.
What is the best sofa comfort for guests?
A medium feel such as Classic suits guests best, because people sit upright, talk comfortably and stand up easily. If the sofa is also your family's lounging spot, a deep seat in Classic with a few soft cushions gives you both.
Why do some new sofas feel too hard?
New foam and fabric need a few weeks of use to settle, so a new sofa often feels slightly firmer than one you have used for years. If the seat still feels hard after that, it is simply a firmer comfort than you like, which is why choosing between a soft and a medium feel before you order matters.
