Celebrating National Day at home

UAE National Day, also celebrated as Eid Al Etihad, marks the union of the emirates on 2 December 1971. In 2026 the country celebrates its 55th National Day. Streets, towers and cars fill with the colours of the flag, and at home families gather, receive relatives and share a festive meal.

Decorating the living room and the majlis is part of the joy. The aim is a home that feels festive and proud while staying elegant and comfortable for guests. The simplest approach is to keep the large pieces calm, the sofa, the walls and the rug, and to bring in the flag colours through small, changeable things.

The four colours of the flag, used with elegance

Red, green, white and black look striking together, and a little goes a long way. A common decorating rule is to let one colour lead, a second support it and the others appear as small accents. Green and white usually lead indoors, with red as the bright accent and black as fine detail.

WhiteThe base of the roomA light sofa, white flowers, candles, linen napkins
RedSmall, bright accentsRed roses, one cushion or a throw, ribbon on gifts
BlackFine detailA lacquered tray, lanterns, picture frames

The calmer the sofa, the brighter the accents look. A Chalk or Biscuit sofa makes green and red glow; on a Dark Navy sofa, white and red cushions look crisp and elegant.

Dress the sofa: cushions and throws

The sofa is the centre of the living room, so it is the easiest place to celebrate. On a 3-seater or a corner sofa, try this arrangement:

  • Two green cushions in the corners or at each end, the largest ones.
  • One white and one red cushion in front of them, slightly smaller.
  • A throw in green or soft white, folded over one arm or the back of the chaise.
  • A small touch of black, such as piping on a cushion or a black and white striped one in the centre.

On a large corner sofa, such as the Comfo corner at 343 cm by 229 cm, six cushions balance the length: three on each side of the corner. Plain cushions in the four colours look more refined than printed flags, and you can reuse the green and white ones all winter. Our guide to arranging cushions on a sofa shows the sizes and the order.

Comfo

A calm Chalk or Biscuit Comfo is the perfect canvas for festive cushions, and its 343 cm corner seats the whole family on the day.

Displaying the flag with pride and respect

The flag itself deserves a place of honour. Keep it for display rather than as a fabric for the home, and let cushions and throws carry its colours.

  • Hang it high: from a balcony, on a wall-mounted pole by the entrance or on a stand in the majlis, clear of the floor.
  • Keep it pristine: clean, pressed and in good condition, with the colours bright.
  • Hang it correctly: with the red band nearest the pole and the green band at the top.
  • Give children their own: small hand flags in a vase on the console, ready to wave on the day.

Inside, a small desk flag on the majlis console or the entrance table is a dignified touch that greets every guest.

A festive majlis for family visits

National Day is a time for visits, and the majlis is where relatives gather. Prepare it as you would for Eid, with a few patriotic touches.

  • Heritage textures. Cushions in Al Sadu weaving, the traditional Bedouin craft recognised by UNESCO, with its red, black and white patterns, are perfect for the day and beautiful all year.
  • The serving console. A brass dallah, finjan cups, dates, luqaimat and sweets on trays, with a small green or red runner beneath.
  • Palm weaving. Baskets in khoos, woven palm leaves, for bread, dates or small gifts for children.
  • Scent. Bakhoor in the mabkhara as guests arrive, the warmest welcome of all.

Keep the seating arranged so everyone faces each other, with a table within reach of every seat. Our guides to arranging a majlis with sofas and hosting for Ramadan and Eid cover seat counts and serving paths for a full house.

Flowers, the table and the light

Flowers are the most elegant way to bring in red and white. Mix red roses and white chrysanthemums or carnations with plenty of green foliage, in low arrangements on the coffee table so guests can see each other over them, and a taller arrangement on the console.

On the dining table, a green runner on a white cloth, white plates, a few red napkins and small candles in black or brass lanterns make a festive setting without any printed decorations. For the evening, keep indoor lights warm white at about 2700 K and save coloured lights for the balcony or the garden, where green, white and red lights look wonderful against the night sky.

A family celebration, and what to keep afterwards

Let children take part. Paper chains in the four colours, drawings of the flag for the fridge, a family photo on the sofa in traditional dress: these become memories that come back every year. A small craft table in the corner of the living room keeps them busy while adults talk in the majlis.

After 2 December, many pieces can stay. Green and white cushions, a green throw and the Al Sadu pieces carry on beautifully into the cooler months, and red can give way to terracotta or deep rust for winter evenings. Store the flag folded neatly with the hand flags, ready for next year.
