The short answer

To clean a bouclé sofa, vacuum it once a week with a soft brush nozzle on low suction, then lift spills by blotting with a white cloth and dabbing gently with cool water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid, if the care label allows water. Work from the outside of the mark inwards, rinse by dabbing with plain water and let it dry in a cool room. Once a month, a fabric shaver and a soft brush refresh the loops, and a professional low-moisture clean every one to two years keeps a bouclé sofa bright.

What you need to clean a bouclé sofa

Bouclé is woven from looped yarn, and the loops are what make it so soft. Cleaning it well is mostly about tools that treat those loops gently. Gather this small kit once and keep it in one cupboard:

ToolWhat it does on bouclé
Vacuum with a soft brush nozzle and adjustable suctionLifts dust and sand from between the loops
Crevice toolReaches the seams and the gap between seat and back
White microfibre or cotton clothsBlot and dab without transferring colour
Clear, mild washing-up liquidLifts most everyday spills in cool water
Distilled waterRinses without leaving mineral marks
Electric fabric shaver with a guardSmooths the surface where you sit most
Soft clothes brush and a rubber gloveFluffs the loops and lifts hair and lint

Before you use any liquid, find the care label. A W or WS code means water-based cleaning is fine; an S code means a water-free upholstery solvent; an X code means vacuum and brush only, with a professional for anything more.

Step 1: the weekly vacuum, the bouclé way

In the UAE, fine sand and dust arrive every day on shoes, clothes and through opened windows. On bouclé they settle between the loops, so a weekly vacuum is the most useful habit of all.

  1. Clear the sofa. Shake throws and scatter cushions outside or on the balcony.
  2. Set the suction low. Gentle suction lifts dust and keeps every loop round and full.
  3. Crevice tool first. Run it along every seam, around the arms and along the back of the seat, where sand gathers.
  4. Brush nozzle second. Glide it over the seat, back and arms in slow, overlapping strokes, letting the nozzle rest lightly on the surface.
  5. Finish with the sides and underneath. Dust under the sofa rises again each time someone sits down.

After a shamal or a dusty week, add a second pass. Ten minutes a week keeps a light bouclé looking bright for years.

Step 2: how to clean a spill on bouclé

Bouclé's loops hold a spill near the surface for the first moments, which gives you time to lift it out. Speed and a light touch do the rest.

  1. Blot at once with a dry white cloth, pressing straight down and lifting, until nothing more comes up. A dabbing motion keeps the loops round.
  2. Mix a mild solution if the code allows water: a few drops of clear washing-up liquid in a cup of cool distilled water.
  3. Dampen the cloth, not the sofa. Wring it until it is barely damp.
  4. Dab from the outside in, towards the centre of the mark, so it grows smaller rather than wider.
  5. Rinse by dabbing with a second cloth dampened in plain distilled water.
  6. Blot dry with a folded towel, pressing firmly.
  7. Feather the edge: lightly dampen a slightly wider circle and blot it, so the area dries evenly.
  8. Let it dry in a cool, air-conditioned room or in front of a fan, then brush the loops gently with your fingertips.

For oily marks such as oud oil or cooking oil, start with a layer of cornflour for 20 to 30 minutes to draw the oil out, then vacuum it off before step 2. Our stain removal guide goes stain by stain.

Whatever the spill, cool water is the friend of bouclé. Warm water can set milk and egg proteins, while cool water lifts them out cleanly.

Step 3: refresh the loops once a month

Where you sit most, bouclé's soft fibres can gather into tiny bobbles over time. Smoothing them takes a few minutes and brings back the even, pebbly texture:

  • Fabric shaver: hold the fabric taut, keep the shaver flat on its lowest setting and glide it over the surface, letting it do the work.
  • Soft brush: brush lightly in small circles to lift the loops and even out the surface.
  • A loose loop: ease it back to the underside with a blunt needle, or trim a long one level with its neighbours using small scissors.
  • Plump and turn: pat the cushions back into shape, so every seat settles the same way.

Finish with a quick vacuum to collect the fluff. Our bouclé sofa guide explains how the fabric lives over the years.

Lifting pet hair, lint and fine sand from the loops

The looped surface that makes bouclé so cosy also holds on to hair and lint, and each comes away with the right tool:

  • A slightly damp rubber glove, stroked across the seat, rolls hair and lint into small bundles you can pick up.
  • A lint roller works well on the arms and the back, rolled lightly.
  • Patting the cushions with a flat hand before you vacuum brings fine sand to the surface.
  • A washable throw on your pet's favourite seat collects most of the hair and goes straight into the machine.

A colour close to your pet's coat makes hair almost invisible between cleans. Cloud suits pale pets beautifully, and Olive or Apricot blend with golden and brown coats.

Step 4: a gentle deep clean every one to two years

A common rule is a professional upholstery clean every 12 to 24 months, and closer to once a year in a busy home. For bouclé, ask for a low-moisture method and a test on a hidden area first, so the loops stay soft and full.

  • Show the cleaner the care label, so they choose a method that suits the code.
  • Keep the room air-conditioned while the sofa dries, with the curtains drawn against strong sun.
  • Let the sofa dry fully before anyone sits on it, then brush the loops lightly by hand.
  • Cool air and patience give the best finish; a hairdryer's heat is best kept for hair.

Between deep cleans, the weekly routine in our sofa care routine does most of the work. Our fabrics page describes each of our fabrics and how it feels.

Questions, answered

Can you use water on a bouclé sofa?

Yes, if the care label shows a W or WS code. Use cool distilled water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid, dampen the cloth rather than the sofa, and dab from the outside of the mark inwards. With an S or X code, use a water-free solvent or leave it to a professional.

Can you steam clean bouclé?

Only if the label allows water and heat, and after a test on a hidden spot. A gentle low-moisture clean by a professional upholstery cleaner is the most reliable way to deep clean bouclé and keep the loops soft and full.

How often should I vacuum a bouclé sofa in the UAE?

Once a week suits most homes, with a second pass after a shamal or a dusty week. Use a soft brush nozzle on low suction so the loops stay round, and run the crevice tool along the seams where fine sand collects.

How do I make my bouclé sofa look fluffy again?

Vacuum it on low suction, smooth any small bobbles with a fabric shaver held flat, then brush the surface lightly in small circles with a soft clothes brush. Plumping the cushions with a few firm pats finishes the job.
