What is a cloud sofa? The soft, deep look everyone wants

"Cloud sofa" is not a brand or a technical category. It is the name people use for a style: a sofa so deep, plump and soft that it looks like a row of clouds. When you search for a cloud sofa in Dubai or a cloud couch in the UAE, you are really asking for a feeling, the moment you sit down and the cushions gently take you in.

The look grew out of the oversized, slouchy sofas of relaxed beach houses and loft apartments, and it has become one of the most wanted shapes in modern living rooms. Where a classic sofa is tailored and upright, a cloud sofa is generous and informal. It invites you to curl up, stretch out, tuck your feet under you and stay for the whole film.

Two families of cloud sofa exist side by side. The first has sculpted, channelled cushions with rounded edges, often in bouclé, like our Nuage. These are general guides rather than strict rules. A sofa with a 58 cm seat and very plump cushions can feel every bit as cloud-like as a deeper one, because the cushions and the comfort count as much as the numbers.

The cloud sofa feels made for the way many families live in the UAE.

• Long evenings together. Dinner is late, guests stay long and the living room is where everyone gathers. A deep seat makes three hours of conversation or a long film feel easy.
• Cool, air-conditioned rooms. For much of the year the AC runs all day, and a soft, warm bouclé feels wonderfully cosy against that cool air.
• Generous living rooms. Villas and many apartments in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah have the space for a sofa with presence. A cloud sofa fills it with softness rather than bulk.

A cloud sofa takes more floor than its width suggests, because the depth is generous. Measure before you choose:

1. Measure the wall where the sofa will stand. A common rule is to leave at least 30 cm at each end, so the sofa does not look squeezed.
2. Measure the depth you can give it. Add the sofa depth, about 40 to 45 cm to the coffee table and about 60 cm of walkway.
3. Think about how you sit. If you love to lie down, a chaise or an ottoman in front of one seat turns a 3-seater into a lounger.
4. Check the way in. Measure doors, corridors and lifts from your side, the depth of the sofa matters most. Modular sofas arrive in separate pieces.

The cloud sofa is the star of the room, so keep everything around it simple and let its softness speak.

• A flat-woven or low-pile rug in jute, wool or a soft neutral, large enough for the front feet of the sofa to rest on it.
• A round or oval coffee table in stone, travertine or warm wood echoes the rounded lines and is easy to walk around.
• Two or three cushions only. The sofa is already plump. A pair in the same fabric and one in a contrasting texture, such as linen, is plenty.
• A light throw in cotton or linen folded over one arm, ready for the evening AC.
• Warm light from a floor lamp beside the sofa makes the texture glow at night.
