Modular or one-piece sofa: what is the difference?
Modular, sectional, one-piece: three words that sound alike but describe very different sofas. Here is what each one means and how to choose.
The short answer
The difference between a modular sofa and a sectional is freedom. A modular sofa is made of identical, independent pieces you can rearrange into any shape, as often as you like. A sectional is made of a few different sections designed to fit together in one set layout, usually an L shape with the corner on one side. A one-piece sofa is a single unit with one fixed shape. All three can be very comfortable: the right one depends on how often your home changes.

In the UAE you will also hear "L shape sofa" and "corner sofa". These describe the shape, not how the sofa is built: an L shape can be modular, sectional or one-piece.
What is a sectional sofa?
A sectional is a large sofa made in two or three sections that join to form one shape, most often an L. Each section has a fixed role: one has the left arm, one has the right arm, one is the corner or the chaise. Because of this, the sections only fit together one way.
When you buy a sectional, you choose the side of the corner or chaise once, at the time of ordering. Left and right are usually named as seen when you face the sofa; our guide to choosing a left or right chaise explains how to get it right.
A sectional is a lovely choice for a room that will stay the same. It gives you the comfort of a large corner sofa, and it still travels in a few sections rather than one huge piece.
What is a modular sofa?
A modular sofa goes one step further. It is made of several similar modules, each one a complete seat. Some have an arm on one side, some have no arm, and ottomans have no back at all. You can line them up, turn them into a corner, split them into two smaller sofas or add an ottoman to make a chaise.
Take Comfo as an example. Three modules in a row make a 3-seater, 343 cm wide. Add an ottoman at one end and it becomes a chaise sofa, 229 cm deep at the chaise. Put an ottoman at both ends and it becomes a U-shape. Move the ottoman from the right end to the left and the chaise changes side, with no new order.

A one-piece sofa is built as a single unit. A 2-seater, a 3-seater or a chaise sofa can all be one-piece. Its great strength is the silhouette: rounded arms, a sculpted back and a seat that runs in one continuous line, which is hard to achieve with separate pieces.
Several of our sofas are one-piece designs. Brioche is a compact 2-seater with soft, rounded arms. Snoozo is a low sofa that opens into a bed. Nuage comes as a 3-seater or a chaise sofa, 262 cm wide, in cloud-soft bouclé. Doudou is a wide chaise sofa, 352 by 210 cm, whose sculpted seat blocks give it a modular look in one generous shape.

Two questions settle most choices. First, how likely is a move or a big change in the family? The more likely it is, the more a modular sofa pays off. Second, how attached are you to one particular look? A strong, sculpted design is easier to find in a one-piece sofa, while a relaxed, generous look is where modular sofas shine.

Does the type change the comfort?
Not much. Comfort comes from the seat depth, the seat height, the cushions and how soft the seat feels. A modular sofa, a sectional and a one-piece sofa can each be very soft or quite supportive.
What changes is the feel of the surface. On a modular sofa you sit on a row of separate seat cushions, with a small gap between them. On a one-piece sofa or a chaise sofa such as Nuage, the seat is often shaped as one piece or as fixed blocks. Some people love the plump, separate cushions of a modular sofa for lounging; others prefer a continuous seat for lying down across the whole length.

Questions, answered
Is a sectional the same as a corner sofa?
Often, yes. A sectional is usually an L-shaped corner sofa made in sections. But a corner sofa can also be one-piece or modular, so the word corner describes the shape and the word sectional describes how it is built.
Is a modular sofa a type of sectional?
You will see both words used for the same sofas. Strictly speaking, a modular sofa is more flexible: its pieces are independent and can be arranged in many ways, while the sections of a sectional usually fit together in one set layout.
Can I change the chaise side on a modular sofa?
Usually, yes. On Comfo, the chaise is an ottoman placed in front of the end seat, so you can move it to the other end whenever you like. On a sectional or a one-piece sofa, the side is chosen once, when you order.
Which type looks best in a small living room?
A compact one-piece sofa with slim or rounded arms often looks the lightest in a small room, because its outline is simple and continuous. A small modular sofa, such as two modules side by side, is a good choice too when you expect to move or grow into a larger home later.
Which is easier to bring into an apartment?
A modular sofa, because each piece travels on its own and is much smaller than the whole sofa. A sectional comes in a few large sections, and a one-piece sofa comes as one unit, so check the lift and the doors against its size before you order.
