2-seater, 3-seater or corner sofa: which one is right for you?
Count the people, measure the walls, then choose: how 2-seaters, 3-seaters and corner sofas compare in seats, space and flexibility.

The short answer
Whether you need a corner sofa or 3 seater depends on three things: how many people sit together on a normal evening, the length of your wall, and the depth of your room. Allow about 60 cm of seat per adult: a 2-seater suits one or two people, a 3-seater seats three in comfort, and a corner seats four or five with one person stretched out. Choose a corner only if you can also give it the depth of the chaise, usually 150 to 230 cm, plus a walkway.
| Seat width per adult | About 60 cm |
|---|---|
| Brioche 2-seater | 206 × 102 cm |
| Nuage 3-seater | 230 × 95 cm |
| Nuage corner | 262 cm wide, chaise 152 cm |
| Space to walk in front | About 60 cm |

Which sofa shape is right for you? The quick rule
Start with the people. Count how many sit together on a normal evening and allow about 60 cm of seat width for each adult. Then look at the room: a 2-seater or 3-seater needs one wall, a corner needs a wall plus enough depth for the chaise, and all three need a walkway in front.
| Shape | Seats in comfort | Typical width | Room it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-seater | 2 | About 150 to 230 cm | Small living rooms, bedrooms, studies |
| 3-seater | 3 | About 200 to 240 cm | Most living rooms, often with armchairs |
| Corner | 4 to 5, one stretched out | About 260 to 350 cm, plus a chaise of 150 to 230 cm | Larger rooms, open-plan spaces, family rooms |
These are general ranges. Always check the exact width, depth and chaise length of the sofa you are considering, because two sofas sold as a 3-seater can differ a lot: our Nuage 3-seater is 230 cm wide, while the Comfo 3-seater, made of deep square modules, is 343 cm. This guide is about the shape; for the exact width your wall can take, see what size sofa you need, and to count places, see how many seats you need.
When is a 2-seater the right choice?
A 2-seater makes sense when the room is small, when the sofa is for one or two people most of the time, or when it is a second sofa in a bedroom, study or reading corner. In a compact apartment in Dubai or Sharjah, it leaves room for a walkway and a coffee table without blocking the balcony door.
The risk is buying one that is too small for real life. Two adults side by side need about 120 cm of seat, so very wide arms eat into it. A good 2-seater also needs a generous seat depth, so that it is still comfortable to lounge on alone.
Our Brioche is 206 cm wide with a 64 cm seat depth: compact against the wall, roomy once you sit down. For more ideas, see the right sofa for a small apartment.
Why a 3-seater is the most flexible shape
A 3-seater fits most living rooms, seats three adults in comfort and works with almost any layout. Add one or two armchairs and you seat five or six without closing off the room. Place two 3-seaters face to face and you have the start of a majlis-style room for guests.
It is also the easiest shape to take with you. If you rent and may move in the next few years, a 3-seater is far more likely to suit the next living room than a large corner, and it is simpler to carry through doors and corridors on delivery day. A fully modular sofa is the other easy answer: the Comfo with a chaise, for example, can become a 3-seater and a separate ottoman in your next home.
The limit: only one person can really stretch out, and only by lying along it. If that person is you every evening, add a footstool or a pouf, or consider a corner.
When a corner sofa is worth the space
A corner sofa earns its place when four or more people sit together most evenings, or when lounging with your legs up matters as much as sitting. The chaise quickly becomes the favourite seat in the house: one person stretches out while the others still have room.
Corners also shape open-plan rooms. With its back to the dining area, a corner frames the living space without a wall. In a villa living room or a large family room, it fills the space in a way a single 3-seater cannot. Torn between two corner shapes? See U shape or L shape and chaise sofa or corner sofa.
The trade-offs are real. A corner needs depth as well as width, it fixes the layout of the room, and you choose the side of the chaise before you order. A fully modular sofa like the Comfo keeps this open: its chaise is an ottoman you can move to the other end later. As a rule, put the chaise on the side away from the main walkway and towards the view or the TV. Our guide chaise on the left or on the right helps you decide.

Nuage comes as a 3-seater or a corner in the same cloud-soft bouclé, so you choose the shape your room needs without changing the look.

How much floor space does each shape really take?
Width is only half the story. Add the depth of the sofa, the gap to the coffee table and the walkway to see the true footprint:
- 2-seater or 3-seater: about 95 to 100 cm of sofa, 40 to 45 cm to the coffee table, a table of about 50 cm, then about 60 cm to walk. Plan for roughly 2.5 metres from the back wall to the far side of the walkway.
- Corner: the same along the back, plus the chaise. With a chaise of about 180 cm and 60 cm to walk past its end, the chaise side needs roughly 2.4 metres.
If the room cannot give you both depths, a 3-seater with a pouf is usually the better choice. Before you order, mark the outline with masking tape, and use the Will it fit? tool on each sofa page, which draws the sofa to scale against the wall length you type. For proportions room by room, read what size sofa for your living room.
What about seating guests for Ramadan and Eid?
Do not size the sofa for the busiest night of the year. Iftars in Ramadan, Eid gatherings and family birthdays bring more guests than any single sofa can seat. A practical approach is to choose the shape for daily life, then add flexible seats: armchairs, poufs, floor cushions, or a second sofa facing the first.
- Two 3-seaters facing each other seat six in comfort and keep conversation easy, which is why the layout works so well for guests.
- A corner plus one armchair seats five or six and still leaves one person room to lounge on quiet evenings.
- A 2-seater plus two armchairs seats four in a small room and is easy to rearrange.
Questions, answered
Is a corner sofa a good idea in a small living room?
Usually not. A corner needs depth on two sides, and in a small room it can block the walkway or the balcony door. A 3-seater with a footstool gives you most of the lounging comfort in less floor space.
How many people does a corner sofa seat?
Most corner sofas seat four or five adults, with one person stretched out on the chaise. Allow about 60 cm of seat width per person when you check a specific model.
Can a corner sofa stand in the middle of a room?
Yes, if the back is upholstered and looks finished, as it does on most fabric sofas. Leave about 60 cm behind it if people walk past, and use the back to separate the living area from the dining area.
Is a 3-seater big enough for a family of four?
For a normal evening, a 3-seater plus an armchair or a pouf seats four comfortably. If all four like to lounge at the same time, or the children are teenagers, a corner gives everyone room to stretch out.
Is a 2-seater big enough for a couple?
For sitting together, yes, as long as the seat itself is about 120 cm wide or more. For lounging, look for a deep seat of around 60 cm or more so that one of you can curl up comfortably.
