The short answer

How to choose a sofa comes down to seven checks, in this order: the space you have, the shape, the seat depth and height, the comfort, the fabric, what is inside, and the full delivered price. Measure first: leave about 60 cm to walk in front and 40 to 45 cm between the seat and the coffee table. Then look for a seat depth of 53 to 56 cm if you like to sit upright, or 61 cm and more if you like to curl up. In the UAE, give extra weight to fabrics that cope with dust, sand and strong sun.

In this guide
  1. Start with the room: how much space does your sofa need?
  2. Which shape: 2-seater, 3-seater or corner?
  3. How deep and how high should the seat be?
  4. Soft or firm: which comfort will you enjoy every day?
  5. Which sofa fabric copes with dust, sand and sun?
  6. How can you tell a sofa is built to last?
  7. What should you budget, and what should the price include?

Start with the room: how much space does your sofa need?

Measure before you fall for anything. Note the length of the wall the sofa will stand against, the distance to the opposite wall or the TV, and where doors, windows, sockets and switches sit. Write the numbers down: they will rule out half the sofas you see in a few seconds.

A few common rules turn those measurements into a size:

  • Wall: a sofa that takes about two thirds of the wall usually looks balanced, with room at one or both ends for a side table or a lamp.
  • Walkway: keep about 60 cm free in front of the sofa where people pass, and 75 to 90 cm on a main route through the room.
  • Coffee table: 40 to 45 cm between the front of the seat and the table is close enough to reach a cup and far enough for your knees.

Then mark the sofa's outline on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day or two. Walk around it, open the doors, pull out a dining chair. Every Pufflo sofa page also has a Will it fit? tool: type the length of your wall and you see the sofa drawn to scale against it. For proportions room by room, read what size sofa for your living room.

Which shape: 2-seater, 3-seater or corner?

Count the people who sit on the sofa on a normal evening, not on the busiest day of the year, and allow about 60 cm of seat width per adult. A 2-seater suits one or two people, a study or a bedroom. A 3-seater seats three in comfort and pairs well with armchairs. A corner seats four or five and gives one person room to stretch out on the chaise.

3-seater3Nuage230 × 95 cm

A modular sofa lets you move between these shapes later. Comfo, our fully modular sofa, comes in six shapes from a 2-seater to a U-shape, and its modules can be separated, joined and rearranged whenever you like.

For big gatherings, such as family evenings in Ramadan or gatherings at Eid, it is usually wiser to add armchairs, a pouf or a second sofa than to buy one oversized sofa that crowds the room the rest of the year. If you rent and expect to move, a 3-seater or a modular sofa fits the next home far more easily than a large fixed corner. The full comparison is in 2-seater, 3-seater or corner sofa.

Comfo

Comfo is the fully modular sofa: deep, soft modules you can separate, join and rearrange, in six shapes from a 2-seater to a U-shape, with room for the whole family to stretch out.

How deep and how high should the seat be?

Seat depth and seat height decide whether a sofa fits your body, and they are the two numbers most people forget to check. Seat depth runs from the front edge of the seat to the back cushion. Seat height runs from the floor to the top of the seat.

  • 53 to 56 cm deep: you sit upright, back supported, feet flat. Good for conversation and for shorter people.
  • 57 to 60 cm: a balanced depth, upright with a cushion behind you or relaxed without one.
  • 61 cm and more: a lounging seat to curl up, tuck your feet in or sit cross-legged.
  • Seat height: 40 to 42 cm feels low and relaxed, 43 to 46 cm is the usual range, and 47 cm or more is easiest to stand up from.

The quickest check is to measure the sofa or armchair you find most comfortable today and compare. Our guide to sofa seat depth and height explains how to find your own numbers.

Soft or firm: which comfort will you enjoy every day?

Softness is personal, so choose for the way you actually sit. If the sofa is mainly for films, naps and slow weekends, a soft seat you sink into feels wonderful. If it is where you talk with guests, work on a laptop, or where older relatives sit, a medium seat that holds you up and lets you stand easily is the better daily choice.

On every Pufflo sofa you choose the comfort, at the same price. Cocoon is very soft: you sink in. Classic is the medium feel most sofas have: you sit on it and get up easily. Each sofa page also has a How it feels guide that describes the seat when you sit and the fabric when you touch it.

Which sofa fabric copes with dust, sand and sun?

UAE homes ask a lot of a fabric: fine dust that settles every day, sand carried in on shoes and clothes, air conditioning for most of the year, and strong light through large windows. The weave decides how easily you keep it clean and how it ages.

Wide-wale corduroyDeep velvet ribs, soft sheenBrush along the ribsSoft and family-friendly

BoucléCloud-soft loops, warmA soft brush and a weekly vacuum keep it freshLovely for cosy, relaxed rooms

Each fabric ages in its own way, and a little care keeps it fresh: corduroy pile can show soft shading where you sit, which a soft brush lifts, and bouclé can form light pilling where you sit most, which a fabric shaver lifts. For sunny rooms, look for a light fastness grade of 6. See our bouclé and fine corduroy on our fabrics page.

How can you tell a sofa is built to last?

The parts that decide how long a sofa lasts are hidden under the fabric, so ask about them. These are fair benchmarks to compare any sofa against:

  • Frame: kiln-dried hardwood or quality plywood, glued and screwed, with corner blocks.
  • Springs: sinuous steel springs across the seat, rather than webbing alone.
  • Seat foam: high-resilience foam of 35 kg/m³ or more, so cushions recover their shape.
  • Fabric: over 30,000 Martindale cycles, a pilling grade of 4 or more, and light fastness grade 6 for sunny rooms.

Our guide to what makes a sofa last covers each part in detail.

What should you budget, and what should the price include?

As a broad range, ready-made store sofas in the UAE often cost AED 1,300 to 5,000, and premium or luxury custom brands usually start above that. Pufflo sofas run from AED 3,290 for the Comfo 2-seater to AED 8,790 for the Comfo U-shape with 6 modules.

Compare the delivered price, not the label price. Ask whether delivery, carrying the sofa in and installation are included, and on which day it arrives. Our sofas are handmade locally by our workshop when you order, then delivered and installed across the seven emirates, included in the price. Your sofa arrives three to six days after you order, and the delivery dates are shown when you order.

Questions, answered

What is the most important measurement when buying a sofa?

The length of the wall, followed closely by seat depth. The wall tells you which sizes fit, and the seat depth tells you whether you will sit upright or lounge. Mark the outline on the floor with masking tape before you decide.

How long should a good sofa last?

With a solid frame, sinuous springs and dense high-resilience foam, a sofa used every day can stay comfortable for many years, and the seat cushions are usually the first part to show wear. Plumping cushions, sitting in different places and keeping the sofa out of direct afternoon sun all help it age evenly.

Which sofa fabric is best for a family home in the UAE?

Corduroy is soft, warm and quick to brush fresh along its ribs, which makes it a lovely choice for family life, and a smooth, tight weave is the easiest to keep clean of dust and sand. Bouclé is wonderfully soft and cosy, perfect for relaxed evenings. Whatever you choose, look for more than 30,000 Martindale cycles.

Should I choose a corner sofa or a 3-seater?

Choose a corner if four or more people sit together most evenings or someone loves to stretch out, and your room has space for the chaise as well as the width. Choose a 3-seater if the room is narrow, if you may move home soon, or if you prefer to add armchairs. A modular sofa lets you start with one shape and change it later.
