Corduroy sofas: wide wale, fine wale and how they age
Soft velvet ribs, rich colour and a lived-in look: a corduroy sofa suits homes in Dubai and across the UAE. How wide and fine wale differ and how to keep corduroy at its best.

The short answer
A corduroy sofa is covered in a soft, velvet-like pile woven into raised ribs called wales. Wide wale has fewer, deeper ribs and a bold, relaxed look; fine wale has many narrow ribs and a calmer, more tailored look. Where you sit, the pile catches the light in lighter and darker tones, the soft glow called shading, and a soft brush along the ribs lifts it again. With a weekly vacuum along the ribs and some shade from strong afternoon sun, corduroy ages into a soft, lived-in sofa that loves family life.

What is a corduroy sofa?
Corduroy is a woven fabric with an extra set of yarns that are cut after weaving so they stand up as a short pile, arranged in parallel ribs. Those ribs are called wales, and the channels between them are where the fabric is thinner. It belongs to the same family as velvet, which is why it shares its soft hand and gentle sheen.
Corduroy is described by the number of wales per inch (2.54 cm). Wide or jumbo wale usually has somewhere between three and eight ribs per inch, while fine wale often has fourteen or more. The fewer the ribs, the deeper and more sculpted each one is.
On a sofa, the ribs add rhythm and depth even in a plain colour, and the pile gives a warm, cosy touch. It is a fabric people tend to stroke without thinking, and one that suits both relaxed and tailored shapes.
Wide wale or fine wale corduroy?
| In daily life | Wide wale | Fine wale |
|---|---|---|
| Ribs per inch | Few, often 3 to 8 | Many, often 14 or more |
| Look | Bold, relaxed, sculpted | Calm, refined, tailored |
| Feel | Deep, plush ribs | Smooth and silky under the hand |
| Pets | A rugged, cosy favourite | A silky place to curl up |
| Children | Lovely | Lovely |
| Dust and crumbs | Settle in the deeper channels: vacuum them out | Stay nearer the surface: a vacuum lifts them |
| Where it shines | Relaxed family corner sofas | Compact sofas, sofa beds, living rooms and bedrooms |
Wide wale suits a relaxed family corner sofa: its generous ribs shrug off heavy daily use. Fine wale suits a tailored sofa in a living room or bedroom; from a distance it reads almost like velvet and keeps a neat line. Our Brioche 2-seater and Snoozo sofa bed are both in fine corduroy, in Ecru, Terracotta, Forest or Indigo.
See both side by side on our corduroy sofas page.

Brioche is our compact, rounded 2-seater in fine corduroy, 206 cm wide, with soft ribs that brush back up in seconds, from AED 6,090.

Yes: corduroy is a soft, hard-wearing choice for a couch you use every day, and it settles in a gentle, graceful way. Here is what to look forward to.
- The first weeks: where you sit, the pile leans over and catches the light differently. You see pressure marks and patches that look lighter or darker depending on where you stand. This is called shading, and it is a sign of a real, soft pile.
- The first months: the pile settles into the way the sofa is used, and the favourite seat shows it first. Brushing along the ribs keeps the surface even.
- The years: on the most-used seat, the tips of the ribs slowly soften and flatten. In direct sun, the pile can lighten. Well cared for, corduroy develops a soft, lived-in look that only gets cosier.
When you compare corduroy sofas, the abrasion grade tells you how long the pile will stay full and the ribs crisp. A common rule is to look for over 30,000 Martindale cycles for a sofa used every day, so it stays beautiful for years.
How to lift pressure marks and shading
- Brush along the ribs. Use a soft clothes brush or upholstery brush, in long strokes in the direction of the pile. Gentle, repeated strokes work better than pressure.
- Plump and rotate. If your cushions lift out, plump them and swap their places every few weeks, so every seat shares the sitting.
- Use steam only if the label allows it. Some owners hold a hand steamer a few centimetres away from crushed pile, then brush it up once dry. Keep the steamer just above the fabric, and test on a hidden spot first.
- Give it time. Pile often recovers on its own after a few hours without anyone sitting on it, especially in a cool, dry, air-conditioned room.
Shading is part of why corduroy looks alive, with colour that moves as you walk around the room.
Everyday care for a corduroy sofa
In the UAE, fine dust and sand settle into the channels between the ribs. A quick weekly routine keeps the pile fresh and soft:
- Vacuum with a soft brush nozzle, moving along the ribs.
- Use the crevice tool in the seams and where the seat meets the back, where sand collects.
- Brush the seats lightly afterwards to lift the pile.
- Blot spills straight away with a clean, dry white cloth, working gently along the grain with the pile.
- Before using any cleaner, read the care label and test on a hidden spot, such as the back or underneath.
Pet hair and lint come away easily with a slightly damp rubber glove stroked along the ribs. For a step by step method, see how to clean a corduroy sofa; our guide on how to clean a sofa in the UAE covers deeper cleaning. If you love loops as much as ribs, read our bouclé sofa guide.
Is corduroy good with children and pets?
Corduroy is one of the friendliest fabrics for family life. Its dense pile takes daily sitting, climbing and lounging, crumbs brush out of the ribs, and the texture keeps small marks out of sight. Children also tend to love the feel of it.
With pets, both wale sizes are lovely: dog hair lifts out along the grain, and sand from paws vacuums out along the ribs. Wide wale has bold, sculpted ribs, and fine wale has a silky, tailored touch your cat will love curling up on. With either, a throw on their favourite spot and a quick wipe of sandy paws after a walk keep the sofa looking fresh.
Colour helps too. A warm tone such as Terracotta blends beautifully with everyday marks and sand-coloured dust, and a colour close to your pet's coat keeps hair discreet between vacuums.
Corduroy in a sunny room
Like every pile fabric, corduroy can lighten in direct sun. The tips of the ribs face the light, so fading tends to show first on the arm or seat nearest the window. In UAE homes with large glazed walls, a few simple steps help:
- Place the sofa where it does not sit in the afternoon sun, especially near west-facing windows.
- Draw a sheer curtain during the hottest hours.
- Choose a fabric with a light fastness grade of 6 or more on the 1 to 8 scale. Grade 6 is a good benchmark for sunny rooms.
- Prefer a light colour such as Ecru near the window: light colours show fading less than deep shades such as Forest or Indigo.
Our guide to sofa fading in the sun explains the grades and the best placement.
Questions, answered
Is corduroy a good fabric for a sofa?
Yes, for most homes. Corduroy is soft, warm and robust, lovely with family life, and its ribs keep small marks out of sight. It also has a signature soft shading in the pile where you sit, which a soft brush lifts.
Why does my corduroy sofa show lighter and darker tones?
The pile leans in different directions where people sit, so it reflects light differently and some areas look lighter or darker. This shading is the signature glow of corduroy and velvet. Brushing along the ribs in the direction of the pile evens it out.
Does corduroy attract dust and pet hair?
Dust and fine sand settle in the channels between the ribs, so corduroy loves a weekly vacuum along the ribs with a brush nozzle. Pet hair lifts easily from the pile with a damp rubber glove or a lint roller moved along the grain.
Is wide-wale corduroy better than fine wale?
Neither is better overall. Wide wale has bold, rugged ribs and suits relaxed family corner sofas, while fine wale looks more tailored and suits a smart living room or bedroom. Both should have over 30,000 Martindale cycles for daily use.
Is corduroy too warm for a hot climate?
Corduroy feels warm and soft to the touch, but in an air-conditioned living room that warmth is usually very welcome. It is cooler to the touch than bouclé and warmer than a smooth weave. Keeping it out of direct sun also keeps the surface from heating up.
