How to clean a corduroy or velvet sofa at home
Corduroy and velvet share a soft pile with a direction of its own. Work with it, and cleaning becomes quick, gentle and satisfying.

The short answer
To clean a corduroy or velvet sofa, first find the direction of the pile by stroking it, then vacuum along that direction once a week with a soft brush nozzle and brush the surface lightly afterwards. Lift spills by blotting straight away and dabbing along the grain with cool water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid, if the care label allows water. Let the fabric dry in a cool room, then brush the pile back up, and it looks as fresh as the day it arrived.
| Golden rule | Always work in the direction of the pile |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Vacuum along the ribs, then brush |
| Spills | Blot, then dab along the grain |
| After cleaning | Dry cool, then brush the pile up |

First, find the direction of the pile
Corduroy and velvet belong to the same family. Both have a short, soft pile of fibres standing up from the weave; velvet has it all over, while corduroy gathers it into parallel ribs called wales. That pile leans slightly one way, called the nap, and it is the secret to cleaning both fabrics well.
To find it, stroke the seat with a flat hand. In one direction the fabric feels smooth and looks lighter: that is with the nap. In the other it feels slightly rougher and looks deeper in colour: that is against the nap. On most sofas the nap runs down the back and from the back of the seat towards the front edge.
Every step below works with the nap: vacuum along it, blot along it, brush along it. That simple habit keeps the pile even and gives corduroy and velvet their lovely, moving sheen.
The weekly clean: vacuum and brush
In UAE homes, fine sand settles into the channels between corduroy's ribs and into velvet's pile. A weekly routine lifts it out before it builds up:
- Clear the sofa and shake throws and cushions outside.
- Crevice tool along the seams, the back of the seat and around the arms, where sand gathers.
- Soft brush nozzle along the ribs on corduroy, and in the direction of the nap on velvet, in long, slow strokes.
- Medium or low suction keeps the pile standing tall.
- Brush afterwards with a soft clothes brush, in the direction of the nap, to lift and even the surface.
Ten minutes is enough for a 2-seater or a 3-seater. After a shamal, a beach weekend or a week with the balcony doors open, add a second pass.
How to clean a spill on corduroy or velvet
The pile of corduroy and velvet is dense, so a spill tends to sit near the top for a moment. Act in that moment and it lifts out easily.
- Blot straight away with a dry white cloth, pressing down and lifting, until no more liquid comes up.
- Check the care label. W or WS: water-based cleaning is fine. S: a water-free upholstery solvent. X: vacuum and brush only, and call a professional.
- Mix a mild solution: a few drops of clear washing-up liquid in a cup of cool distilled water.
- Dab along the grain with a barely damp white cloth, from the outside of the mark towards the centre.
- Rinse by dabbing with a cloth dampened in plain distilled water, then blot firmly with a dry towel.
- Feather the edge by lightly dampening a slightly wider area and blotting it, so the whole patch dries evenly.
- Dry in cool air, in an air-conditioned room or in front of a fan.
- Brush the pile up along the nap once it is completely dry.
For oily marks such as oud oil, cover the spot with cornflour for 20 to 30 minutes first, then vacuum it away before you start. Our stain removal guide has the details for coffee, oils and ink.
Corduroy and velvet: what changes between the two
| Step | Corduroy | Velvet |
|---|---|---|
| Vacuuming | Along the ribs, crevice tool in the channels | In the direction of the nap, all over |
| Brushing | Along the ribs, long strokes | With the nap, very light strokes |
| Spills | Dab along the ribs | Dab, then smooth the nap with the cloth |
| Pet hair and lint | Damp rubber glove along the ribs | Lint roller or damp rubber glove with the nap |
| Refreshing the pile | Brush, then let the sofa rest | Brush, or a steamer held at a distance if the label allows |
| What it does beautifully | Ribs that hide crumbs and small marks | A deep, glowing colour |
Fine corduroy, like the one on our Snoozo and Brioche, sits between the two: fine velvet ribs that brush fresh in seconds and look calm and even from across the room.

Snoozo is our low sofa bed in fine corduroy, 190 cm wide, with velvet ribs that brush fresh in seconds; Brioche, 206 cm wide, shares the same fabric. From AED 6,790.

Where people sit every day, the pile leans over and catches the light in a new way. This is part of the charm of a velvet-family fabric, and it is easy to bring the surface back to an even look:
- Brush along the nap. Long, light strokes with a soft clothes brush lift the fibres. Several gentle passes do more than one firm one.
- Give it a rest. A few hours without anyone sitting on it, in a cool, dry, air-conditioned room, lets the pile rise on its own.
- Steam from a distance, only if the label allows water: hold a hand steamer a few centimetres above the fabric for a few seconds, then brush once dry. Test on a hidden spot first.
- Share the seats. Plump the cushions and use every seat, so the pile settles evenly across the sofa.
Sand, pet hair and sun: extra tips for UAE homes
- Sand in the ribs: pat the seat with a flat hand before vacuuming to bring fine sand to the surface, then run the crevice tool along the channels.
- Pet hair: a slightly damp rubber glove stroked along the ribs rolls hair into neat bundles. Corduroy releases hair very easily this way.
- Sun: draw a sheer curtain during the strongest afternoon hours, and the colour stays rich for longer. Our guide to sofa fading in the sun explains where to place a sofa.
- A washable throw on the favourite seat during the busiest months saves many cleans.
Corduroy is one of the most relaxed fabrics for family life: the ribs hide crumbs, and dry crumbs and sand brush straight out along the grain.
Deep cleaning and drying a corduroy or velvet sofa
A common rule is a professional upholstery clean every 12 to 24 months. For pile fabrics, ask the cleaner to follow the care label, test a hidden area and use as little moisture as possible, then to brush the pile in the direction of the nap before it dries.
Drying is where pile fabrics shine with a little patience. Keep the room cool and air-conditioned, keep the curtains drawn against strong sun and let the sofa dry fully before anyone sits on it. Once dry, a final light brush along the nap gives an even, velvety finish. For the full weekly and monthly routine, see our sofa care routine.
Questions, answered
Can I use water on a corduroy sofa?
Yes, if the care label shows W or WS. Use cool distilled water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid on a barely damp white cloth, dab along the grain, rinse by dabbing and blot dry. Brush the pile up once it is completely dry.
How do I get marks out of a velvet sofa where people sit?
Brush the area lightly in the direction of the nap with a soft clothes brush, then leave the sofa to rest for a few hours in a cool room. If the label allows water, a hand steamer held a few centimetres away for a few seconds, followed by a light brush once dry, lifts the pile.
Which way should I vacuum corduroy?
Along the ribs, in the direction of the pile. Use a soft brush nozzle on medium or low suction in long, slow strokes, and run the crevice tool along the channels and seams where fine sand collects.
How do I remove pet hair from a corduroy or velvet sofa?
Stroke the fabric along the nap with a slightly damp rubber glove: the hair rolls into small bundles you can pick up. A lint roller works well too, especially on velvet. Finish with a quick vacuum along the ribs.
