Fine sand is the quiet enemy of a sofa. A simple routine, the right vacuum technique and safe spot cleaning keep fabric fresh for years.

The short answer

To clean a sofa in the UAE, vacuum it once a week with a soft brush nozzle, run the crevice tool along every seam where fine sand collects, and blot spills straight away instead of rubbing. Before using any liquid, read the cleaning code on the care label (W, S, WS or X) and test on a hidden spot. A professional deep clean every 12 to 24 months, following that code, keeps the fabric fresh for years.

Why fine dust and sand wear out a sofa

In the UAE, dust is not only a cleaning issue, it is a wear issue. Fine sand comes in on shoes, clothes and bags, through balconies and opened windows, and in larger amounts after a shamal or a dust storm. It settles on the seat, slips into the seams and works down between the fibres.

Each grain is a tiny abrasive. Every time someone sits down, the grit rubs against the fibres from the inside, a little like fine sandpaper. Over months, that dulls the colour, thins the pile and speeds up wear on the seats you use most. Dust also makes a light sofa look grey long before it is actually dirty.

The good news is that dry dust is easy to remove if you do it regularly. A ten-minute vacuum each week does more for a sofa's life than any cleaning product.

Read the care label first: W, S, WS and X

Most upholstery carries a cleaning code, on a label under the seat cushions or under the sofa. It tells you what kind of cleaner the fabric can take:

CodeWhat it meansWhat you can use
WWater-based cleaningWater with a little mild detergent, or an upholstery foam
SSolvent-based cleaning onlyA water-free upholstery solvent; water can leave marks
WS or S/WEitherA mild water-based solution or a solvent, used sparingly
XVacuum or brush onlyNo liquids at all: call a professional for stains

European labels often use care symbols instead: a tub means washing is possible, a crossed-out tub means the fabric should not be washed, and a circle with a letter refers to professional cleaning. Whatever the system, follow it. Test any product on a hidden spot, such as the back or underneath, and let it dry before going further.

If you cannot find a label, treat the fabric as if it were coded X: vacuum and blot only, and leave anything wetter to a professional who can test it. Keep a photo of the label on your phone, so you have the code to hand when a spill happens.

How to vacuum a sofa properly

  1. Clear the sofa. Take off throws and scatter cushions and shake them outside.
  2. Lift loose seat cushions if your sofa has them. Sand collects underneath and in the deck.
  3. Crevice tool first. Run it along every seam, the gap between seat and back, and around the arms.
  4. Brush nozzle second. Vacuum the seats, back and arms in slow, overlapping strokes, following the direction of the pile on corduroy.
  5. Low suction on textured fabrics. Bouclé loops and corduroy pile do not need full power.
  6. Do the sides, the back and underneath. Dust settles on every surface, and the floor under the sofa sends it back up.
  7. Brush the pile on corduroy afterwards with a soft brush.

Once a week is enough in most homes. In dusty weeks, after a shamal, or in a ground-floor villa with doors to the garden, twice a week keeps grit from building up.

How do you clean bouclé, corduroy and smooth weave?

FabricDust and sandSpillsWatch out for
BoucléHolds dust in its loops: vacuum weekly on low suctionBlot gently, never scrubStiff brushes or nozzles that catch loops
CorduroySettles in the channels: vacuum along the ribsBlot along the grain, brush up when dryRubbing across the pile
Smooth weaveSits on the surface: the easiest to removeBlot, then dab with a damp cloth if the code allowsOver-wetting, which leaves rings

Of the three, a smooth, tight weave is the easiest to keep clean of dust and sand, because there is no loop or pile for grit to hide in. Our bouclé Nuage follows the bouclé row, and our fine-corduroy Brioche and Snoozo follow the corduroy row. How to spot clean a sofa without leaving rings

Water rings appear when a damp patch dries from its edges, carrying dissolved dirt and minerals outwards. The way you work matters as much as the product.

  1. Blot the spill with a clean, white, dry cloth until nothing more comes up.
  2. If your code allows water (W or WS), mix a few drops of clear washing-up liquid into a cup of cool water. Distilled water lowers the risk of mineral marks.
  3. Dampen a white cloth, not the sofa, and dab from the outside of the mark towards the centre.
  4. Rinse by dabbing with a cloth dampened in plain water, then blot firmly with a dry towel.
  5. Feather the edges: lightly dampen a slightly wider area and blot it, so no hard line forms as it dries.
  6. Let it dry in a cool, air-conditioned room or in front of a fan. Never use a hot hairdryer or direct sun.

For specific stains such as coffee, oud oil or ink, our stain removal guide goes step by step.

Deep cleaning: when and how often

A common rule is to have upholstery professionally cleaned every 12 to 24 months, and sooner in a home with young children or pets. A professional upholstery cleaner checks the code, tests the fabric and chooses the method: low-moisture cleaning or hot water extraction for W fabrics, solvent cleaning for S fabrics.

A few points before you book:

  • Ask for a test on a hidden area, especially on bouclé and corduroy.
  • Avoid soaking: too much water can reach the foam and take a long time to dry.
  • Keep the room air-conditioned while the sofa dries, and keep it out of the sun.
  • Rented carpet machines are designed for floors and can over-wet a sofa. Use one only if the code allows water, and with a light hand.

Habits that keep a sofa cleaner for longer

  • Shoes off at the door, with a good mat outside and another inside. Much of the sand in a home arrives on feet.
  • Close windows on dusty days and whenever the wind picks up.
  • Wipe sandy paws after walks and beach trips, before your dog jumps up.
  • Use a throw on the favourite seat and wash it instead of the sofa.
  • Keep bakhoor and candles at a distance. Smoke leaves a fine film and a lingering scent in fabric, and a hot burner should never sit near upholstery.
  • Clean or change AC filters regularly: cleaner filters mean less dust settling indoors.

Put together, these habits turn sofa care into a short weekly task. This guide shows how to clean; our sofa care routine sets out when, day by day, week by week and year by year.

Questions, answered

How often should I vacuum my sofa in the UAE?

Once a week suits most homes. Vacuum twice a week in dusty periods, after a shamal, or if you have pets or doors that open onto a garden or beach. Regular light vacuuming removes grit before it wears the fibres.

How do I get sand out of a sofa?

Lift any loose cushions, then run the crevice tool along every seam and the gap between seat and back, where sand collects. Follow with a soft brush nozzle on the seats. Patting the cushions firmly before you vacuum brings fine sand up to the surface.

Can I use baby wipes on my sofa?

It is best not to. Wipes often contain lotions, fragrance or alcohol that can leave a residue, a ring or a change of colour, especially on pile fabrics. Use a white cloth with water and a drop of mild detergent instead, if your cleaning code allows water.

Can I steam clean a sofa?

Only if the care label allows water and heat. Steam can shrink some fabrics, flatten pile or leave water marks, so always test on a hidden spot first. For a full clean, a professional upholstery cleaner who checks the code is the safer option.

How do I get bakhoor or cooking smells out of a sofa?

Air the room well and vacuum the sofa thoroughly, including the seams. A light sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda, left for 20 to 30 minutes and then vacuumed off completely, absorbs many smells; test it on a hidden spot first, especially on dark fabric. For smoke that has built up over months, a professional upholstery clean works best.
