How to perfume your sofa with bakhoor and oud, and keep the fabric lovely
A home that smells of bakhoor is a home that welcomes guests. Here is how to let the scent settle softly into your sofa while the fabric stays fresh and beautiful.

The short answer
To perfume a sofa with bakhoor, light it in a mabkhara placed on a heat-proof tray about a metre or more from the sofa, and let the fragrant smoke drift through the room for 10 to 15 minutes with the doors closed; the fabric picks up the scent gently from the air. For oud and perfume oils, scent a cotton throw or the cushions you can wash rather than the sofa itself. A weekly vacuum and fresh air between sessions keep the fabric bright, so the scent stays soft and welcoming for days.
| Burner position | On a heat-proof tray, a metre or more away |
|---|---|
| Time to scent a room | About 10 to 15 minutes |
| Oud and perfume oils | On a throw or washable cushions |
| Keeps the fabric fresh | Weekly vacuum, fresh air between sessions |

Why perfuming the sofa is such a lovely tradition
In homes across the UAE and the Gulf, scent is part of hospitality. Bakhoor is lit before guests arrive, passed around after a meal and used on Fridays, during Ramadan and for Eid. A living room or majlis that smells of oud and amber feels warm and generous before anyone says a word.
Soft furnishings are where that scent lives. Cushions, curtains, rugs and the sofa itself hold fragrance far longer than bare walls and floors, so a well-perfumed sofa keeps the room welcoming long after the burner has cooled.
The art is to let the scent settle on the fabric gently, from the air, so it smells beautiful and the sofa stays as fresh and bright as the day it arrived.
How to perfume a sofa with bakhoor, step by step
- Prepare the room. Vacuum the sofa first: fragrance settles more evenly on clean fabric. Close the windows and doors so the scent stays in the room.
- Set up the burner. Place the mabkhara on a heat-proof tray, on a stable side table or on the floor, about a metre or more from the sofa and the curtains.
- Light the charcoal and let it turn grey before adding the bakhoor, so the smoke is soft and fragrant.
- Use a small piece. One or two small pieces of bakhoor perfume an average living room beautifully.
- Let the smoke drift. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. The air carries the scent across the room and onto the cushions and fabric.
- Turn the AC to a gentle setting so the air moves softly through the room and spreads the scent evenly.
- Air for a few minutes once the bakhoor has finished, then close the room again. The light top notes clear, and the warm base notes stay in the fabric.
Many families like to carry the mabkhara slowly around the room for a minute, holding it at arm's length and at waist height, so the fragrance reaches every corner. Keep it moving and let the smoke rise into the air above the seats.
Oud oil and perfume oils: where to put them
Oud oil and other perfume oils are wonderfully long-lasting. They are at their best on materials made to be washed, where the oil can sit and slowly release its scent:
- A cotton or linen throw folded over the arm or the back. Dab two or three drops on one corner.
- Washable cushion covers. Scent the inside of the cover, on the seam, so the fragrance drifts through.
- Small cotton pads or wooden beads in a bowl on the side table or tucked behind the cushions on a small dish.
- Curtains, near the hem, which the breeze from the AC gently moves.
The sofa then picks up the scent from its surroundings, softly and evenly. If a drop of oil does land on the upholstery, cover it with cornflour for 20 to 30 minutes, then vacuum: our stain removal guide explains the full method for oud oil.
Room sprays and fabric mists
Sprays are the quickest way to refresh a sofa just before guests arrive.
- Spray into the air above the sofa from about 50 cm away, and let the fine mist fall softly onto the fabric.
- Choose a fabric mist made for upholstery, and test it on a hidden spot, such as the back of the sofa, before the first use.
- Spray personal perfume on yourself before you sit down. The sofa will catch a little of it anyway, in the loveliest way.
- Two or three sprays are enough for a 2-seater or 3-seater; scent builds over time.
How each fabric holds a fragrance
Every soft fabric holds scent in its own way, which helps you decide how often to perfume:
| Fabric | How it holds scent | A lovely routine |
|---|---|---|
| Bouclé | Its loops hold fragrance generously and for days | Bakhoor once or twice a week |
| Fine corduroy | Its soft pile keeps a gentle, lasting scent | Bakhoor once or twice a week, oil on the throw |
| Velvet | The dense pile keeps a rich, warm note | Bakhoor before guests |
| Smooth, tight weaves | Release scent quickly, ready for a fresh one | A short session more often |
| Cotton and linen throws | Carry oils beautifully and wash easily | Oud oil on one corner, washed every few weeks |
Our Snoozo and Brioche are in fine corduroy, and Nuage is in bouclé: all three keep a perfumed room smelling welcoming for days.

Bakhoor smoke carries tiny fragrant particles. A few easy habits keep the fabric light and the scent clear:
- Vacuum once a week with a soft brush nozzle. It lifts the fine film that builds up from smoke and dust, so each new session smells fresh.
- Air the room for ten minutes a day, early in the morning or after sunset when the air is cooler.
- Refresh with bicarbonate of soda every few months: sprinkle lightly, leave for 20 to 30 minutes and vacuum it off completely, after a test on a hidden spot.
- Wash throws and cushion covers every few weeks, and they come back ready to take a new fragrance.
- Give light colours the morning air. Ecru, Cloud and Ivory stay bright with regular airing and a weekly vacuum.

Questions, answered
How long does bakhoor scent last on a sofa?
In a closed, air-conditioned room, the warm base notes of bakhoor usually stay in sofa fabric for several days. Bouclé and corduroy hold scent for longest. A short session once or twice a week keeps the room smelling welcoming.
Can I put oud oil directly on my sofa?
Oud oil is at its best on a cotton throw, washable cushion covers or cotton pads in a bowl nearby, where it lasts longer and washes out easily. The sofa then takes the scent gently from the air around it.
Where should I put the bakhoor burner?
On a heat-proof tray on a stable side table or on the floor, about a metre or more from the sofa, curtains and cushions. That distance lets the smoke spread through the room and settle on the fabric softly.
How do I soften a scent that has become too strong?
Open the windows for twenty minutes, vacuum the sofa thoroughly, and wash any throws and covers. A light sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda, left for 20 to 30 minutes and then vacuumed off, absorbs much of the remaining fragrance.
